Hello Stranger,
Goodbye Phoebe
April 30, 2011
Hello stranger, put your lovin' hand in mine
Hello stranger, put your lovin' hand in mine
You are a stranger
And you're a pal of mine
Get up rounder, let a workin' man lay down
Get up rounder, let a workin' man lay down
You are a rounder
But you're all out and down
-Solo-
Every time I ride six and four street car
Oh, every time I ride six and four street car
I can see my baby
Peepin' thru the bars
She bowed her head, she waved both hands at me
She bowed her head, she waved both hands at me
I'm prison bound
I'm longing to be free
-Solo-
Oh I’ll see you when your troubles are like mine
Oh I’ll see you when your troubles are like mine
Oh I’ll see you
When you haven't got a dime
Weepin' like a willow, mournin' like a dove
Weepin' like a willow, mournin' like a dove
There's a girl of the country
That I really love
-Solo- Repeat Verse 1
Six and four street car (Straßenbahn Nr.64)
You make me laugh
Cause your eyes they light the night
They look right through me
You bashful boy
You're hiding something sweet
Please give it to me yeah, to me
Talk to me some more
You don't have to go
You're the Poetry Man
You make things all rhyme
You are a genie
All I ask for is your smile
Each time I rub the lamp
When I am with you
I have a giggling teen-age crush
Then I'm a sultry vamp
Talk to me some more
You don't have to go
You're the Poetry Man
You make things all right
So once again
It's time to say so long
And so recall the cull of life
You're going home now
Home's that place somewhere you go each day
To see your wife
Talk to me some more
You don't have to go
You're the Poetry Man
You make things all rhyme
I've had a tumultuous time these last 2 weeks, so I'm putting up some songs that I've been thinking about, along with a bit of a story.
First, "Hello Stranger", (or a version of it) played on Saturday on the Prairie Home Companion Radio Show. It has a sweet, goofy, "accepting" quality.
The Carter Family's version, which is much more intriguing, but still sweet and sentimental, while at the same time seeming to avoid sentimentality. I don't know what it means, I just like the way it all sounds...

Its a long time since I've felt so unmoored and confused. Hello, stranger.
Hello stranger, put your lovin' hand in mine
Hello stranger, put your lovin' hand in mine

And you're a pal of mine
Get up rounder, let a workin' man lay down

Phoebe Snow died this week, but two of her songs kept returning to me,
more reasons to be glad that I'm still around.
